According to published reports, the Yankees signed veteran outfielder Marcus Thames to a Minor League deal.

Marcus Thames, who turns 33 on March 6, will come in competing with Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time, according to SI.com, which first reported the signing. Thames will get $900,000 if he makes the 25-man roster, the New York Post added.

The right-handed-hitting Thames batted .252 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs in 87 games for the Tigers in 2009. He was originally a 30th-round Draft pick by the Yankees in 1996 and appeared in seven games for them as a rookie in 2002. From 2006-08, Thames — a career .243 hitter — averaged 100 games, 23 homers and 57 RBIs per season in Detroit.

Thames has been mainly a left fielder throughout his eight-year career, having played 252 of his 522 games there, but he has also spent 67 games in right field and 44 at first base.
