In what he referred to as something at the heart of our national life, President Barack Obama honored the arts on Sunday night.

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a reception for this year’s Kennedy Center honorees, prior to the 32nd annual Kennedy Center Honors at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Among the recipients was film legend Mel Brooks, a man whose many punchlines could not be repeated by the president, Mr. Obama said.

“I was telling him that I went to see Blazing Saddles when I was ten,” Mr. Obama said. “He pointed out that, I think, according to the ratings I should not have been allowed in the theater. That’s true.”

“I think I had a fake ID,” he then muttered, drawing laughs from those in attendance. “But the statue of limitations has passed.”

The president went on to praise Brooks for his great satirical works, which illuminate the uncomfortable truths about racism, sexism, etc.
