Barry Manilow’s Copacabana

On July 21, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera begins a two-week run of “Barry Manilow’s Copacabana” at the Benedum Center. Manilow wrote the script and the music for the musical that had its world premiere at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in 2000.

He created its all-Manilow lineup from songs he has written, sung and popularized during a career of more than three decades.

In one four-year span, five Manilow singles became gold records by selling more than 500,000 copies. The songs are listed according to the date that the Recording Industry Association of America certified their gold status.

• Jan. 6, 1976 — “I Write the Songs”

• Sept. 7, 1977 — “Looks Like We Made It”

• April 6, 1978 — “Can’t Smile Without You”

• Sept. 7, 1978 — “Copacabana”
